Many Boulder residents awoke Thursday morning not to the sound of buzzing alarm clocks, but to the rumble of a vintage Korean War-era jet buzzing overhead.
The jet, according to officials at the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Jefferson County, was a Lockheed T-33 flown by its owner, Broomfield resident Roy Halladay.
Halladay couldn’t be reached Thursday, but some residents and airport officials in Boulder are steaming over the flight.
“It was really loud,” said south Boulder resident Don Glen, 78. “You think, ‘What the heck is that?’”
According to eyewitnesses — including Glen and many others in the area who called to complain to Tim Head, manager of the Boulder Municipal Airport — Halladay’s stainless-steel red, white and blue military training jet was being followed by another small turbo-prop plane over Boulder from about 6:50 to 7:20 a.m.
The aircraft took off from the Jeffco airport, Head said, and were flying relatively low and directly over the city.
Head said the planes were low enough to wake many residents, especially because the flight went back and forth across the area.
“It wasn’t just a pass over the city,” Head said.
Boulder police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said dispatchers received at least a dozen calls about the aircraft, but they referred complaints to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Head said he told callers who were upset about the early-morning buzzing to contact the Jeffco airport.
“We make sure pilots don’t do stupid things like this,” Head said of the Boulder airport. “It gives pilots a bad reputation.”
FAA rules prevent most flights from cruising closer than 1,000 feet above a populated area.
Kenneth Maenpa, manager of the Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, said Halladay did not break any rules in making the flight, although it may have been poor judgment to fly over the city in the early morning.
“The fact that it was 6 in the morning was unfortunate,” Maenpa said. “I’m sure he won’t do it again.”
Maenpa said he has since spoken with Halladay, and the veteran pilot apologized for causing a stir.
Maenpa said Halladay was doing aerial photography with the smaller “chase plane,” and he was taking advantage of the sunrise and mountain backdrops.
According to Camera archives, Halladay works as a corporate pilot. He spent 10 years rebuilding the T-33 jet from new and salvaged parts.

Get over it, people. You know what it was?
It was the sound of Freedom!
So you all know, he is an excellent pilot...he is flying that plane every year in displays for people who go to the Jeffco Open House, putting on a great show and not receiving a dime for it! God forbid he wants to have some fun on his own time...
If he was being followed by another plane, bets are good that his aircraft will be featured in a magazine in the near future, which could bring tourists and their money to your "fair" city.

At least he didn't do barrel rolls down the runway at 200 feet like some Brit Wing Commander did just before church at my 'Catch 22' base in Britain back in the 60's. He was adverting 'his' air show that day (that began after church).
Pretty dang impressive and he got away with it too!

Caller: "There is a plane flying over the city!"
Dispatch: "M'am, are you hurt or injured?"
Caller: "No, I've just never been awake at 7 a.m. before. Can't you do something?"
Dispatch: "We'll have an officer drive by your area."

I'm a pilot and plane owner, too, so I understand aircraft make noise. That's fine.
But in this case he made repeated very low passes over south Boulder before 7 am. That's just plain rude.
Yes, I bet he got beautiful sunrise pictures from the chase plane. But in the process,in a matter of minutes, he did immeasurable damage to the hard work that responsible aircraft owners have invested trying to educate folks, for years, that we CAN get along, with a little mutual respect.
It was asinine and selfish, albeit probably not "illegal". It shows very poor judgment, which is critical in a good pilot and desirable in a good neighbor.

Yes, I heard it. No, the world didn't stop revolving because of it.
In other words, this is NOT a crisis, folks. Woken up a bit earlier than usual? Go out and admire the sunrise. Say hi to the neighbors walking their dogs. Take the time to fix a healthy breakfast.
Appreciate the fact that the sound you hear bought you the freedom to do all these other things.
Look up and smile.

BTW – The traditional definition of “buzzing” (from a flying point of view) is to be flying VERY low.
When I saw him he was quite high, probably as high as typical propeller planes. The difference is being a jet, he was louder.

As much as I like/respect the "Sound of Freedom", I agree with boardman that it's a bit uncool to be doing a photo shoot early in the morning over the city ... but of course, that's when the light is the best.
Speaking of the Rocky Mountain Airport Airshow, here some pictures from last month - http://www.komar.org/sound-of-freedom...
Given the outrage a few years back when a B-1B did a flyover for the ROTC graduation, I can imagine the response by Republic of Boulder'ites if Roy had been flying an F-16 or F-18 and hit the afterburners in the dawn's early light ... ;-)

He flew by (and by and by and by) an hour after sunrise. A more considerate option would have been to get his pics with snow in them in Dec and we'd all be awake and wave.

This guy is no different than the dozens of building contractors operating at any given time. They would just as soon wake up the whole town as a couple of dozen immediate neighbors. It wouldn't matter to them.
The jet noise wasn't a major rod, though I'm continually amazed at the number of people who think whatever they want to do (or approve of someone else doing) should just naturally override everyone else's wishes. What's OK for them should be OK for everyone. Quit whining!
They are probably the same folks continually complaining about other people "telling them how to live their lives" or "forcing their priorities on other people."
I must confess I think of these bully-victims as borderline sociopaths.

The pilot must be laughing his a-- off. I'm sure his pilot buddies are, too.
Too bad, Snoopy, cause In the long run, the public at large will have the last laugh when they start closing down some of these smaller local airports, which serve little than the interests of a very small group of people and usually at the general expense of the neighborhoods below.
Snoopy did a great deal of harm this morning to efforts of people, like Mr. Maenpa, who indeed do try to see that local pilots who use his airport are good neighbors.
Speaking of noise, I truly wonder how people in Boulder put up with the glider-tow planes. Now THERES some real noise.

sorry bikerfan1 but I was up before Roy this morning and the angle of the view of him from my office window as he buzzed South Boulder right over my house clearly told me he was under 1000'. That's the rule according to the article.
I've heard that he has apologized, which is the right thing to do, and I'm sure we won't see him again for a long while, most probably thanks to the pilot community who have probably told him to cool his jets in lieu of not wanting stronger rules coming down due to too many p*ss*d off people.
All in all it was still another great day in the neighborhood (like most in South Boulder ;) ).

Some of you miss the point. If everyone has the attitude "I can do this and it doesn't hurt anyone", then it will cause a real mess. Maybe it doesn't hurt anyone to go to the bathroom on the sidewalk but if everyone did it there would be quite a mess. Just like all the people who leave their dog's poop along the way - justifying that "it won't hurt". Maybe not just one dog but magnified into several piles or bags of poo - that creates a problem. The trouble with many people in this country is that they are just plain selfish! They don't care about anyone but themselves. That is exactly what was wrong with this stupid fly-over. It was rude, selfish and the man didn't give a damn about anyone but himself. That is it in a nutshell.
