City and county emergency dispatchers are getting flooded with calls from residents worried there's a forest fire burning in the foothills. But they say the smoke is coming from fires burning on the Western Slope.
Lightning strikes have started as many as 30 small fires on the Western Slope since Sunday. Most have stayed small, but one blaze has grown to 27,000 acres. Firefighting crews say they expect to have it fully contained by today.

Wow, quite a bit of smoke 'wafting' our way.

Well, that explains it. That is as moresmilesplease has said, quite a bit of smoke 'wafting'. Then again.. 27k acres is a lot of wood to burn. I'd love to see a satellite picture of it. Too bad google maps isn't real time.

I was a little confused during my morning jaunt up the peak to peak-- early morning the high peaks had wisps of the brown bathtub ring that the front range can get. By later on, the peaks were enveloped in a pinky fog, pouring over from the west side, that looked more like smoke, despite it being otherwise crystal clear up here. Beautiful!

So, apparently it's blotted out the view of the mountains from broomfield, my current location. I have to wonder if the 27k fire is not going to be 'contained'.

Where exactly are these fires? Northwest CO is a broad area.

Even though the winds may blow quickly at times, the air mass that carries the smoke moves only some 15-25 miles per hour (slower in summer), approximately west to east on average. As the crow flies, it's about 200 miles from Meeker and Craig. The smoke from yesterday's fire there is only now reaching us here. The cool inversion is ideal to trap the smoke close to the ground instead of dispersing it.

With all the beetle kill up there, its amazing that this is the first big fire of the year. If we don't remove those dead trees there will be some big, bad conflagrations in the next few years.
Free firewood?

It can't be 27,000 acres. That would be big news. I just checked the Post and the Grand Junction Sentinel and can't even find a mention. I wish they would say where the fires were. I'm going camping tomorrow.

I wish they would say where the fires were.
Then it would be an informative article.

What about the 57,000 acres burning in Wyoming? Couldn't that contribute to our haze???

from The Coloradoan:
"Residents up and down the Front Range are reporting haze and smoke, but local officials say most likely coming from the Mayberry fire, 32 miles northwest of Craig."

Maybe this was something else, but I noticed smoke when I walked outside of my front door this morning. I thought another house in the neighborhood was on fire. Did anyone else notice it at street level?

You could smell the smoke in Louisville this morning, and the divide looks like LA on a bad day. Yet all the Camera sys is that there are fires burning on the west slope. Seriously deficient reporting!

Hey, I thought it was just the huge carbon footprint wafting in from all the celebs' limos and their private jets flying into and out of Denver for the DNC convention (not to mention all the attendant hot air).

When I left the house yesterday morning, I thought that perhaps I had hibernated until 4/20....
