Trail Tale: Find solitude just outside Boulder
Even in snow, the trail to Saddle Rock can be a quick way to get into the mountains west of Boulder.
As part of the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks, the brief hike to Saddle Rock is appealing to families with small children and folks hiking in Boulder for the first time coming from sea level.
Given its proximity to downtown Boulder, the area offers unexpected solitude and this time of year, crisp, fresh air. Plus, as always, visitors can expect beautiful scenery.
To begin the hike, follow the Gregory Canyon Trail and, rather soon, take the left fork, crossing Gregory Creek. The footpath leads uphill through a pleasantly dense forest, eventually joining the Amphitheater Trail.
In some areas the well-maintained trail leads you up a steep ascent, and snow can be a problem on the trail. Be prepared for any type of weather.
Coming upon another fork, take the trail to your right. At this point, expect to see expansive views of Boulder to the east and an unobstructed view of one of Boulder's popular Flatirons.
If you go
To the trailhead: At Baird Park, immediately left where Baseline Road turns into Flagstaff Road, veer west and park at the Gregory Canyon trailhead.
Distance: 2.6 miles round-trip
Elevation gain: 1,250 feet
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Dogs: Yes, on leash
You will eventually reach a ridge on the short trail, and immediately to the north is Saddle Rock. To the west, you can see the Indian Peaks. Some folks opt to do an uncomplicated rock scramble to Saddle Rock.
Return the way you came or take the Amphitheater trail when it merges with the Saddle Rock Trail, which leads back to the trailhead.
The canyon is named for an early gold miner, John Gregory, who is said to have planted many apple trees along this route in the mid-1800s.
