'Family Ties' star charged with felony

A former child actor arrested last week on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend was formally charged Tuesday in Boulder County District Court with felony menacing, third-degree assault, false imprisonment and obstruction of telephone service.

Brian Bonsall, 25, paid a $5,000 bond to get out of jail earlier this week and appeared in court Tuesday with his attorney. Bonsall, who played Michael J. Fox's kid brother, Andy Keaton, in "Family Ties" from 1986 to 1989, remained silent for his hearing.

Clad in a long-sleeved navy shirt and low-rise blue jeans, Bonsall kept his hands grasped behind his back — his shaved head showing off the tattoos on the back of his neck, including one of a green clover.

Bonsall's girlfriend told investigators March 28 that he poured an alcoholic drink in her face as she slept, put her in a choke hold and threw her into a bed when she tried to leave their apartment on Balsam Avenue, according to a police report.

Bonsall told officers that he threw his girlfriend in self-defense because she came at him with a steak knife and cut his arm and face, the report said. The 26-year-old woman denied allegations that she slashed Bonsall, according to police.

Well, what else can they do in this case? There doesn't appear to be any evidence of any crime. It is basically her word against his.

Generally, we shouldn't be putting people in jail when there is no evidence of a crime.

If I recall the show correctly, Alex Keaton would want him put in jail for life or executed, meanwhile the parents would be doing a drum circle protesting the man, and Mallory would chew gum and twirl her hair. Now thats good TV!

Why is this never was getting so much press? How many domestic disputes in our community get no coverage beyond a name on a court docket? Typical Daily Camera drivel. This Bonsall guy is a loser, what editor thought we'd be interested to hear about him? Even the headline is misleading. Since when does a 2-year stint on 'Family Ties' consitute stardom? Another limp story from a phlacid paper.

Well, he did get two years of face time in prime time on one of the top-rated shows of the time. That counts as being a star. Okay, a minor star.

And, it is not the Camera's fault for making a bigger deal out of it than the story deserves. They give people what they want.

People are star-struck by celebrities these days more than ever. They want to read about the sordid details of their lives.

If you want the coverage of this crap to stop, you need to change the way the public thinks of celebrities.

Then again, you did read this article, didn't you? You seem be to just as star-struck as everyone else.
